In general, I support anything that limits my exposure to minimum wage workers but, have not had good experiences with self-checkouts. They're slow or are always whining that I put something in the bag wrong.
I still use people for checkout.
After addition:
Wow, I had no idea you were so close minded.

If I don't have a ton of items, I will use the self checkout. I am not a big people person either and I would rather just get in and out without all the useless banter that goes on with the cashier's. However, if I do have a lot, I respect that and use the cashier. At our local grocery store, they set a limit on how many items you can have to use self checkout.

I use the self-serve checkout if I don't have a lot, but when I'm buying a lot I really prefer to just have someone else do all the scanning and handle the change and that king of thing. I think that a fast cashier is actually more convenient than self-serve!

I prefer a cashier. I get annoyed each and every time I am forced to use the self serve (our store does not employ a cashier before 7 am, so I only have to use them to get milk for my coffee - and dealing with the self serve before my first cup of coffee is just a disaster in the making.) I have called the manager over EVERY time because SOMETHING goes wrong - and this just makes the whole checkout process take longer and adds aggravation.

I do both. I love people and would always choose them over self checkout except for the fact that I am very anal about the way my groceries are bagged. I'm not anal about a lot of things, but I like to bag my avocados on top of the canned tomatoes. So, I use the self check out about 3/4 of the time.

When I have the kids with me, I use a cashier as sadly I'm not an octopus so im thankful when someone else is bagging for me. When im by myself I always use self serve unless I have a full trolley load.
My cashiers aren't very friendly anyways so I dont worry about making small talk

Sometimes I am faster than the person scanning my groceries, so I always use the self serve if available. Normally the human contact with a cashier baffles me because they are so young that they have side conversations and it takes them longer to check me out and sometimes they are good, but I still would like to check myself out.

The grocery store I go to doesn't have them but when we lived in Edmonton the store I shopped at there did. I used them when I had just a few items to check out. It was faster then standing in line. When I had a full basket I went to the cashier because they packed the groceries and were faster at putting in codes for produce then I was.

I prefer not to use self check lines. On occasion when I do seems to always give me problems which I have to call for help, so I might as well have just gone to a cashier line. Also self server lines are taking jobs away from people who need them.

No self serve checkouts.
Yes to checkout line with a cashier.

Having worked in customer service for a number of years, I avoid the self check out like I would avoid the plague. I feel it's just another way for them to lower customer service standards and their costs without passing on their savings to the customer. My children and husband laugh at me, but I stand by my reasoning. I prefer human contact.

The 2 stores I shop at the most don't have them but if I go across the river to the newer stores that have them I always use them. If I have alot of stuff or something marked half off that needs to be done manually then I will skip them.

I dig them for the same reason, I'm not much of a people person PLUS it seems most people around here don't really care for them, cutting the wait down to nothing. Another perk, the boys dig scanning stuff themselves, always have. Now they can have fun with it, as long as they don't double or even *gasp* triple scan on me....lol

I love the self checkouts, and use them whenever they are available. I am not a people person, either, and am perfectly happy getting my errands taken care of with the least amount of human contact possible.

I usually always go to self scan checkouts. I can put my stuff through, and get out of the shop, much quicker than going to a normal checkout.
Saying that though, I think they should only let certain people use them. I hate waiting in the queue, whilst feckwits take ages trying to scan their shopping and figure out how to use the machine.

they would be awesome if they didnt have so many 'errrors' on them. Every time i go to one, i am guaranteed it will error atleast twice while im ringing up and call a customer service person over to help because it says i didnt 'bag' the item even though i did.
I only use them when the lines are too long and i have a few things only.

The walmart here took them out, then when they built two new walmarts they didn't put them in. So we don't have the option. When they were there, we check ourselves out because cashiers double ring items and do a crappy job at bagging stuff and it's just annoying having to rebag stuff while putting it into the buggy or out in the car. I do not want my bananas under my potatoes or my frozen items in with my flour.
Plus I don't like people much either.

I use them if I just have a few items. otherwise it's not worth the hassle since most of the scanners are a PITA. My dad made a comment once about how he wont use one unless they start giving discounts since we are doing the work. Thought that was funny.

If im doin a whole weeks shop then i go to the ones with a person, if im popping in for a few things says a basket full then ill go self service
2011-05-11 12:37:07 UTC
Self check out whenever possible. The kids love to scan the items and see you can get to the change first! They now have self check out our library and we love it!

Honestly, I don't use them much, but I don't really know why, maybe just habit of having a person there I guess.. I always have a bunch of coupons - can I use my coupons at them?

I don't use them. I used to work in retail and I know for a fact that they put real people out of a job.

Often, simply because it's faster.

I've never used one before. I'm not sure how....
