I have a 4 year old (girl) and a 16 month old (girl). The only movies my 16 month old will sit through are ones with almost constant music and dancing. My 4 year old will watch just about any cartoon movie. She loves Barney, Disney movies, Princess movies, etc. I got 'Bella Ballerina' and my kids both love it. Their 2 year old friend (boy) also likes it. Some people freak out about their boys dancing to ballerina stuff, but it's educational and fun. Anything fun, active, and educational is what I pick. Anything from Disney or Nick Jr. is usually a good choice.

It depends. You can go with something like Madagascar which has humor that is pretty much at the child level, or Cars that has a little something more behind the jokes.

You can pretty much bank on this for anything animated:

Pre-1960 = absolutely safe.

Post-1961-1980 = Mostly safe, though some things are a little "advanced"

Post 1980 = You'd better watch it with them, or see it before they do. Depending on what you deem clean.

Honestly, I'd recommend watching the movies with them the first time regardless. Make it special, pop some popcorn, get out sippy cups with juice/chocolate milk, be prepared for short attention spans, turn off the lights, curl up on the couch and make a memory.

Once, we actually made movie tickets that we had to give to Daddy in order to see the movie. It was so much fun and a great experience. :)

The Secret of NIMH for the older girl definitely (the 4 yr old would probably be okay with it too) ~ not sure if a 2 yr old would have the same attention span for anything a 6 yr old would watch, that might be a bit tricky! The Sound of Music and the Wizard of Oz are always good choices, lots of music and funny characters.

Usually Disney movies are pretty good to go for. Some of the more modern Disney stuff like The Emperor's New Groove is good - it's got action that your son will like plus it's a cute storyline for your girls. Other movies are ones like Shrek. Movies that stimulate their thinking, with good music sound-tracks that they can bop along to and enjoy singing. It's hard to avoid but try not to choose something that will drive you crazy. Or try to set a rule for your kids where you don't watch the same movie twice in a row - that way you don't end up getting driven insane by having the same movie on constant replay.

There's only 1, and that 1 is the original Wizard of OZ:) I watched it for the first time when I was 4 yrs old, and ever since then the Cowardly Lion has made me laugh to tears:)

Try the company "Feature Films for Family." All the movies there are "G" rated. There are mystery, drama, comedy and animated.

Along with the movies are questions for discussion between parents and children.

I don't know if you're very religious or not, but there's a very cute series out called Veggie Tales. There little animate vegetables that teach you about God. My family is just semi-religious and we love them! They're very cute and super funny. They have a lot of catchy songs. I highly suggest trying one out!
2006-07-27 19:39:23 UTC
I'd recommend that you show them "The Demonic Hardcore Zombies From Hell - Part 3".

LOL, if you don't like the sounds of that one, you might want to try Disney movies.

Best Regards,

Veggie Tales!! They are age appropriate and teach your children values and morals. These shows teach life lessons on a childs learning level, my children love them and they can tell me things that they have learned from watching the shows.
