My daughter is 18 and a senior in high school. She's told us that she's not interested in attending college because she wants to pursue a career as a mechanic. For the past two years she's had a part time job with a local company that repairs heavy duty diesel engines. I think she's lost touch with the fact that a career path like that isn't suited for a woman. My sister-in-law is a mechanic and co-owner of this company she been working at and I think she'd be surprised if she knew how little most people respect women who take on dirty jobs like that.

Who cares if it's suited for a woman? She can make a good deal of money. Would you rather she majors in underwater basket weaving, graduates deep in debt and becomes a housewife? Because that's the "career" path I see a lot of women taking.

Perhaps she simply likes to fix things.

All my life I have made a career out of repairing broken stuff, machines to computer networks.

If it breaks and you know how fix things, you will always have a job.

As for your other two statements:

"she'd be surprised if she knew how little most people respect women who take on dirty jobs"

"I think she's lost touch with the fact that a career path like that isn't suited for a woman"

I disagree with you and respect any person willing to work for a living, doing anything they enjoy or have to do to make ends meet.

I disagree with you. Perhaps 50-60 years ago a woman who had a job like that wouldn't have respect but I think in today's world, she does. If she enjoys it, she should do it. Until there are self-repairing cars, there will always be a need for mechanics and she will probably always have a job.

I beg to differ. Let her follow her dreams. Respect, I kind of think your wrong about that. There are woman pilots, train engineers and so on. I work on huge CAT engines as a Level 1. My level 2 is a woman and can work circles around the guys I work with. Take that college $ and surprise her with a Tech School. Well worth it. Good luck to you and her.

I think your trolling. Your arguments that the job is not suited for women, and that women who hold these jobs are not respected, indicate that you are looking to insight an argument.

In actuality, women are admired for holding such positions and for possessing the knowledge required to work in those fields. There is absolutely no disrespect offered toward them, surprise perhaps, but not disrespect. And who says women are not suited for such work? Of course they are, most just prefer something less likely to break a nail. If your daughter wants a respectable job where she becomes a master in the field, let her be.

Why not? If she has a sturdy mechanical flair and likes to get her palms grimy. adult males do dominate, yet that doesn't propose she will't compete if she is robust sufficient. do not understand what the earnings would be yet with right this moment's complicated motor vehicle technologies, my wager would be that that is going to pay extra desirable than MacDonald's and much less that a innovations physician. basically kidding. The pay has have been given to be incredibly sturdy. attempt watching the pick provides, you are able to hit upon a earnings selection there. that is an uncomplicated residing so i won't be in a position to confirm a unfavorable. The constructive ingredient would desire to be that she's doing what she needs to do. beginning her very own shop would desire to be very high priced, fantastically with the hi-tech equipment required to repair right this moment's autos. i'd say, first issues first: The pick to, the practise, the journey, and finally, the financing.

Wait, Trixie made an underwater basket weaving major joke? Hilarious.

I second the trolling, but kickass if it's actually true. My husband would be ecstatic.
