I don't think Bob Dylan is a misogynist, he was just of his time, not that I like the nasal whiner

Please Joan, we know you brought four boys up on your own, you really don't need to mention it in every question you ask though I understand your justified pride in them.

EDIT: Maybe you didn't mention your boys in the original question Joan but you do mention it a lot.

My point is, you are a regular here and most people know you and your circumstances. There is no need to explain it over and over. This is not a criticism. If anything it's a compliment becase you have obviously made your mark on Y/A.

I think in terms of misogyny, modern rock and rap makes Bob Dylan look like a militant suffragette. The fact is, that Dylan's a lyrical genius, misogynist or not, which is what makes him the heir of Woody Guthrie. Personally, I always thought "Okie from Muskogee" was pretty hokey, the sort of song that George W. Bush would really, really like.

I happen to like Bob Dylan and Merle Haggard. I don't see how this has anything to do with parenting though. And I definitely don't think Dylan is a misogynist.

And I can think of a lot of Merle Haggrad songs kids shouldn't hear.

1. Bob Dylan's misogynistic lyrics (alleged) have nothing to do with parenting. Whether or not to sensor your children's music interests would be a parenting issue.

2. "Everybody Must Get Stoned" has NOTHING to do with women. It's a simple song about being damned if you do, and damned if you don't, with the double entendre of the chorus line "everybody must get stoned" as in you can't win for losing, and as in smoke pot (it was that era afterall.) I have NO idea where you're coming from.

3. You're comparing apples and oranges, and the verse you quote of Merle Haggard's song misrepresents the point of this piece. It's a country song talking about not being a hippy, not being a 'big city' kind of guy, about it being cool to be a country guy in a small town, and how he likes his simple country life and the old-fashioned small-town mentality. There is absolutely no relevant similarities between the messages in these two songs. At all. Whatsoever.

Is Dylan a misogynist? I have no idea. He was so damned stoned most of his career he sounds like he's recovering from a stroke, and I can't understand him. But there's nothing but your enemy, sarcasm, in this song to offend you.

You ask a question that has nothing to do with parenting, you're clearly ignorant of all things Bob Dylan, and you want to argue with all responses you've requested by posting this question. Dylan was a storyteller. He was many things, but heart-felt is not one of them. If you found some lyrics to be misogynistic, keep looking, and eventually you'll find some that are feminist. He's contradictory.

Even when it's not about your DIL you're quite vile. You insulted answers on the original question as well as here. No wonder you're paranoid about people deleting your questions, with such a disposition as yours.

Bob Dylan's lyrics are actually stories or books put to music. A good analogy would be a Bob Dylan song is like a good fictional novel. Bob Dylan is not at all like you perceive him to be. He is a very giving Christian. Try listening to his Christian album, "Slow Train Coming". It's great and he states that it's the album straight from his heart. If I'm going to let my grandson read Harry Potter books then I certainly am going to let him listen to Bob Dylan music and just explain to him the analogy I stated above. "Hurrican Jones", a protest song of Dylan's helped to free an innocent man from prison who had been wrongly convicted and imprisoned for years. You just need to read about Dylan. He was a genius, yet stood for justice for everyone including women.

Certainly Dylan was (and is!) a genius. He writes to ask the questions that many dare not ask in the face of authority!

Love him or hate him, you have to give that man credit where it's due...my fave Dylan song is All Along The Watchtower, which was covered by...the late, great Jimi Hendrix. It's stood the test of time...

Bob Dylan is a classic and his songs should be left alone.

The songs that say bi*ch and shooting people etc are the ones to critisize.
