Does the school day start when the child arrives at school or when the first bell rings?

If a student arrives at school and leaves before the first bell rings to get to class should they be required to sign out? Or should they only be required to sign out if attendance has already been taken for the first class. This is for middle school age and I am looking for other parents perspectives on this.

If the child is on campus after the bell rings, then they should need to sign out to leave regardless if attendance has been taken. If the child leaves campus before the first bell rings then they should not need to sign out.

In my son's middle school, when you walk into the school, you cannot leave without a parent. You would not get out of the school, it is in lock down. But the day starts with the bell.

I would think it was when the bell rings for the first class of the day

i personally think the school day starts when they step foot on the morning bus, or step foot in the school.

the teachers and staff have a responsibilty to keep track of our kids, when they are on school grounds.

if the school day didn't start until the bell rang, and your child was taken from the playground on school property, while under the care of the playgound monitors, who would you blame? then they would say-well, the bell hasn't rang yet, so he wasn't our responsibility. there is a fine line. you would blame the school , right? becuase you would have thought it was their responsibility to be watching for your child. -and that is the way it should be.

It should depend on the school's policy.
