I hear so many screeching kids on trians etc i just wondered why no one uses dummies anymore. My mum used them when we were kids, but no one seems to bother these days letting their kids scream and piss everyone off! Do they still even sell them?

I agree with you...they should shut the screaming things up. I was recently subjected to a 12 hour long haul flight sitting near a couple of screeching kids who took it in turns to screech and sleep.
Mothers don't care that their little 'angels' are making others' lives a misery...they are very selfish. Dummies (pacifiers) should be obligatory.....that or Valium.
3 thumbs down??...I bet you weren't a victim on that long-haul flight or you wouldn't think like that.
Vimar....it's not the kids I blame, it's the selfish, self-righteous parents...why take young kids on long haul flights..why not wait 'till they're older?

They still sell a very wide variety of dummies, however if they are used constantly then they generally tend to lose their effectiveness as a pacifier (a way of calming a child).
You can also not give a screaming child a dummy and expect it to quieten them, most children who haven't been trained onto a dummy will just spit it out immediately.
I think the reason a lot of people do not give their children dummies is that they believe it will give their children bad teeth and slow their speech development, however this is untrue (my brother had a dummy until he was 2 1/2 and has perfect teeth and has excellent speech).

Most people avoid them now for reasons such as speech, letting child develop their tongue and cheek muscles, believing that children have rights to express opinions even if this expression is screaming (and yes the UN convention of chidlrens rights acknowledges this) etc.
Personally if your child (not literally yours) is screaming and crying the parents responsibility is to see to the child, amuse them, care for them, find out what wrong etc...not just stick and dummy in and ignore the child! Too many people just see the dummy as a way of shutting the kid up rather than dealing with the emotional side of things.

well my son use to have a dummy when he was a new born but a month later he didn't want it and would spit it out now he just thoughts them across the room lol its so much harder to take a dummy of a child is better if u introduce a blanket of Teddie or some thing like that to help settle the baby

I heard that using dummies when young can cause teeth problems later in life like teeth sticking out at the front. I have no idea though! i had a dummy when i was younger and ended up having a brace on in my teens to staighten my teeth out.

All of my kids had a dummy till they are / were 2 1/2, dummies are hard to get rid of but that shouldnt stop a child having one from birth......

Do you anti-kid dimwits realise that you were a kid once? And no doubt you screamed and cried at times and pissed a lot of people off? Get over yourselves and realise that kids make the world go round.

I had the worst dream ever last night that I was a surrogate mother for my sister, she wouldn't let me see him when he was born and it was totally nasty. I've sent her an abusive txt.
I used dummies, I was a good mum.

Er, they do! Both mine had a dummy, used only at sleep time or when poorly. BTW, they both have wonderful teeth, and didn't catch anything nasty ;)

I used them with all 4 kids, and it worked out great. nothing wrong with their teeth, or anything. I would rather them suck on that then something that they can keep, like a thumb that causes buck teeth due to pressure.

yeh they still sell them.
its cos health visitors and midwives advise against them becos they stop babies mouths and speech developing properly, never did me any harm, and i used them on my son who's now 3. however my sis and bro never used them on their kids but the kids never took to them, they just refused to put them in their mouths.

oh I use one, my baby has colic, and it really helps settle him, not only that he loves it and ill worry about weaning when the time comes!

you cant force kids to have dummies you know!!perhaps youd like to sit for hours being forced to suck on something you arent interested in!!kids cry !its natural!!if you cant cope with it become a hermit!!!

Because there unhygienic and make kid's have buck teeth which these days stay like that due to not enough NHS dentists.
Edit:so what your saying is,I should or should have...my children are grown up now, stuck a piece of plastic in their gobs as a way of pacifying them so as not to upset others...bloody good parenting that is eh?!
