It will be very difficult, no doubt. Try distracting him/her with something else that keeps the hands busy. Some parents may disagree with this, but try bribery!! A favorite candy or new movie they have been dying to see if they can go for a time period without the thumb!! Make a chart, when they can go for let's say 3 days without it, reward them in some way. You also need to look at anything that may be bothering them, the thumb could be a security thing?? Just some thoughts!!
