Parents- If your parents smoked growing up?

Did you say you would never smoke because it was so gross? Are you now a smoker or non smoker?

If they smoked inside, did you hate it? If you ended up being a smoker did you say "AT least I'll never smoke inside"?

My parents smoked inside and I always hated going to school smelling like an ashtray. I swore I would never smoke but I started in 9th grade. My reasoning was if I'm going to smell like a cigarette it's going to be my own. I never wanted to put my kids through the same thing so I vowed I would never smoke inside. My sister has never smoked in her life. I was just curious how other people were affected by the smoking of their parents.

Both my parents smoke and did when I was little. They smoked inside until my mom started falling asleep with cigs in bed. So they smoke outside and it's been that way for years. I smoked and I always knew I would because when they used to first light the cig I always loved the way it smelled. Weird... but oh well.

Well my parents use to always tho partys at my house... and my parents and all their friends smoke. My dad smokes Parliaments and my mom smokes Virgina slims. All their friends either smoke Marbol or cigars or whatever. I can def say that because of them I started myself. I've been smelling the great smell of when a cigarette is first lit since I was 2. Thats funny that you started in the 9th grade because so did I with a salem menthol. My parents finally caught me because I hid a pack of pall malls under my bed and my mom was cleaning my room one day and found it. They yelled at me NOT FOR SMOKING but for smoking "Such a cheap brand" lol. ! There was this muslim that owned a gas station a couple miles down from my house. If you were underage he would just look around... make sure no cops were around and charge you a dollar or two extra for the pack and back then I was just happy to have my own pack! I'm 18 now and the funny thing is now that I can legally buy them I barely smoke... only when I go to the hookah bars :) I will most likely begin to smoke again when I'm in my 20's the way I did when I was 15, 16 and 17... so you can say that because I've been around smoking so much I was doomed from the begining :p

I grew up with both of my parents smoking. My dad gave up about 10 years ago, but my mum still chain smokes. I haven't lived with them for over 15 years and I am proud to say that I have never even so much as tried a cigarette. It has just never appealed to me. My 3 cousins are the same. Their parents both smoked all through their childhood and still do and they hated it. None of them have ever smoked. Although I think your parents were wrong for letting you smoke at 13, it was your choice to start, unoless they forced you of course so am not sure how they can be directly to blame? This is the 21st century, you dont have to be a sheep, do what you want, not what others do!

Both my parents smoked inside our home when i was young, i hated it. My other siblings 2 sisters and 2 brothers now smoke. I still hate it although i did try it when i was 14 to see what all the fuss was about but it made me physically sick and i have never smoked since. My home is smoke free and my family and friends know this and have to smoke outside or not at all. My kids are 5 and 3 and hate the smell and think its disgusting, i hope they keep these views and never smoke not only because of the smell but the damage it can do to your health.

my parents chain smoked while I was growing up even though I had chronic bronchitis they did not care. I hated it and I knew I smelled like an ash tray. I swore I would never smoke and I never did. I am 40 years old and have never smoked. Both my sisters (older and younger...I am in the middle) did start smoking, my older sister has quit a couple times but then starts again and my younger sister still smokes even around her daughter. My older sister has two daughters and her oldest daughter (18) smokes :(

I have 4 boys 16, 16, 14 and 11 and so far none of them smoke and they all say they hate it and would never do it....I hope they stay smart.

My parents were/are chain-smokers. My dad smokes over 3 packs a day. Mom has recently cut back. They smoked their whole lives since around age 12 according to them. They always told all three of us children how gross it was and to never even try it. Amazingly, not one of us smoke. I haven't even ever tried it once.

My brother and I had childhood asthma so that was also a good deterrent not to smoke. I couldnt smell the smoke because i had always grown up in it. However, now that i am living in my own home with my family, i can smell it as soon as we open the door to my parents house---yuck.

BUT to answer your question. Yes, both parents smoked and No, not one of us children ever have.

My parents smoked, my grandparents smoked, my aunts and uncles smoked, my brother ended up starting when he was 14. My SIL (his wife) even smokes.

My parents smoked inside until I was something like 10 or 11 years old, and then suddenly they flipped to smoking outside or next to an open window.

Do I smoke? No. Did I ever? Proud to say I never touched a cigarette in my life.

Smoking outside does not help 100%. Carcinogens are still stuck to your clothes, your skin, and your hair, so unless you plan on showering and changing your clothes fresh every time you go outside, you're still exposing your kids to the harmful carcinogens with every hug and kiss.

How have I been affected by smoking? Well, my father has had a heart attack, my mother is only 50 and looks 75, and my grandmother died of lung cancer when she was only 53. And everyone stood around after the funeral smoking. How disgusting and inappropriate.

My mom smoked through all my growing up years.

My dad smoked a pipe when I was very young, but I have no real memories of him smoking. (I just know because there were pipes in the desk drawer and we have pictures of it.

I never smoked because I knew it was a dangerous and pointless habit.

(When I was a kid (60's and 70's) smoking was still very socially acceptable, so the idea that one wouldn't want to 'go to school smelling like an ashtray' really didn't come into it. People smoked EVERYWHERE.

My entire family chain smoked inside. My mother smoked while she was pregnant with me.

The result, I have asthma and swore I would never start smoking. I thought the smell was disgusting and I hate smelling like it.

During high school I ended up smoking for maybe a month at most. I went through a rebellious stage, but I hated smoking, I just couldn't do it.

When I was pregnant with my son, my grandparents didn't give a crap that I didn't want any smoke near me, but they didn't care. So my son was exposed while I was pregnant, but I will never let anyone smoke near him.

And I hope when he grows up, he won't smoke.

I also can't stand when I see other parents smoking with their kids in the car or even in the house. Even though its illegal to smoke in the car with a child, people still do it. It makes me sick and I feel so bad for the children who are exposed to it.

IF I was a smoker, I would never, ever smoke near him, or even let him see me doing it.

My Mother and Father both smoked. My Mom quit when we were young though (all of us under 10). We thought it was disgusting and we would dramatically tell them that they were going to die. (Everything is dramatic when you are a kid)

And ironically all three of us ended up being smokers (my sis and I have both quit while my brother is still a pack a day).

Neither of my parents smoked inside and neither my sister or I smoked inside (my brother does).

My Mother smoked when I was a kid. Inside, outside, car rides, everywhere.

I've never smoked. Not because of Mom's example, because I don't like the idea of being addicted to something and I compete in sports.

My dad smoked and he did it in the house. My mother never smoked.

I smoked for a number of years, never inside. I quit cold turkey a little over 4 years ago. Two out of my three siblings smoke. One does it indoors at her home sometimes.

My parents smoked (but quit 3 or 4 years ago). I have never smoked. Not because it's gross but because it's not healthy.

both my parents smoked, anywhere. my dad eventually quit. i never said i wouldn't smoke, i just never considered it until i started smoking as a teenager. i didn't do it because of my parents at least not consciously. my brother never smoked. however, when i got pregnant the first time I quit and never went back. my husband smokes but he is not allowed to smoke in the house, around the kids or around me (when pregnant)

My dad did, my mom didn't. It never phased me. It was much more accepted back then too, not as much knowledge out there as now.
