Our 4yr old son hates to go to the loo to answer his second call of nature.?

Inspite of the restroom being very clean, well lit, he hates to answer his second call of nature. It is NOT constipation. When he is getting it, he has his own innovative ways to stop it. Only when it is unstoppable, he rushes to the loo. There is NO joking here. Therefore, would sincerely appreciate your valuable tips to solve this issue.

Is this only in public? If so try to get him to "Go" before leaving the house. Many people (even my 45 year-old husband) have problems going #2 in a public restroom. Let him know that trying to withhold it can cause him to become ill, and that you will have to take him to the doctor. Sometimes that will get kids to go.

I'm assuming you've tried taking him to the loo when you go. it may seem odd, but at least he can see what's going on. If the child has siblings, I suggest the same. He's only 4, don't be concerned that it will last. Believe it or not you may be able to find childrens books or videos dealing with this type of issue. My son used to have reservations about "doing the doo" in public facilities. He eventually got over it. (His siblings took him to the loo quite often.) I'm sorry I wish I had better suggestions.

Dang, that's rough. It sounds like to me that your little guy is not wanting to stop what he is doing to do something that is considered a chore. Have you tried letting him look at picture books or reading to him while he's on the potty? Maze books worked particularly well for our son when we had this problem. We also keep a small radio and hand held games in the bathroom that our son can play with and listen to as well. This way going to the bathroom isn't quite the "chore" that it used to be. Further, our pediatrician has spoken to our boy about "listening" to his body and responding appropriately by going to the bathroom. For some reason he has really responded to "listening" to his body. Good Luck!

My little sister was afraid of the potty. Finally we found out she was afraid of spiders, that she claimed were in it. My mother assured her that there were no spiders in there (and she was right), but my little sister was still frightened of it. My mother had to work to get her daughter used to the loo so she would use it.



Your son my have some similar unreasonable fear. Try to find out, ask him why he doesn't want to go to the loo. Assure him that it is safe. Maybe even dad can use it (or a big brother) to show him that it is safe.

Maybe he's afraid, or maybe he is experiencing pains. Talk to him. He is old enough to know what he is feeling. Ask him directly. There is nothing better than confrontation, and understanding of one another.

This is very common in children at strange places. If they are doing it at home..........encorage them to sit on potty with books the same time everyday.
