If you can spank without projecting your anger on your child, then go for it. You can't do it with any infraction (i.e. spank for running around in a store, but take away toys for stealing a cookie before dinner), but you do have to stay consistent. That being said, most people can't do it.

When their child ticks them off by doing something wrong, they spank out of anger. THAT is borderline abuse. You have to stay in control for spanking to work. AND you have to let your child know WHY they are in trouble.

When I was younger I got spanked and to me the whole process is more intimidating a child by fear than actual discipline. I hated it and I was always terrified. It's much more effective to just take things away or do time outs or any other kind of punishment depending on what the child did. I personally would say no.

Yes. My parents spanked me when I was a kid. It hurts mentally. As long as it isn't to the skin or too hard because that would just be inflicting pain.

I believe spanking should be and option available to parents but i believe it should be the least favored one due to the potential that it carries to cause harm ..It should never be a first resort nor should it be and ordinary occurrence for a child .

Discipline. Spanking will make your child scared of you.

Spanking a child is wrong,it just teaches them violence is fine!

Also why would anyone want a child to be afraid of them?would't you much rather look up to you as a positive role model.why teach a child smacking is wrong if you're going to smack them?it doesn't make sense.

i would bring it back. I know I learned my lessons that way. Scolding will just make them want to do what ever they did again, because they haven't learned from what they did. Call me old school, but that was the best discipline when I was young. And it taught respect.
